How to play MIKATA

  1. Divide the grid into exactly two regions.
  2. Every cell in each region must be connected horizontally or vertically.
  3. No 2×2 area may belong entirely to the same region.
  4. A Mikata clue counts the cells in its surrounding 3×3 area that belong to the same region as the clue cell. The clue cell itself is included; cells outside the grid are ignored.
  5. The clue colour is unknown. The two final region colours are interchangeable.
  6. In Balanced puzzles, the two regions have equal sizes, or differ by one cell on an odd grid. In Free puzzles, their sizes may differ.

The nine colours are deduction pencils. You may keep several temporary groups, then use Merge until only two colours remain. Keyboard: 1–9 selects a colour, 0 or Backspace selects the eraser, Ctrl/Cmd+Z undoes, Ctrl/Cmd+Y redoes, and Enter checks the grid.
